‘Husky Hops’ IPA to debut at UConn-Yale game

Fans attending a University of Connecticut vs. Yale football game at Rentschler Field in East Hartford next month will have the first chance to sample “Husky Hops,” a new beer developed by Southington-based Kinsmen Brewing in collaboration with UConn’s Division of Athletics.

The drink — described as an IPA with notes of pineapple, white peach and tangerine — is intended as a tribute to “Husky spirit,” said UConn Athletic Director David Benedict.

“We are particularly proud of being able to partner with a growing local company and participating in an industry which is growing throughout Connecticut and the region,” Benedict said.

Husky Hops will make its debut at the UConn-Yale game on Oct. 16. It will eventually be available at concession stands at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field, a kiosk at the entrance to Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, concession stands at the XL Center in Hartford, and all on-campus facilities that sell beer, according to a statement from Kinsmen.

Kinsmen co-owner Bruce Staebler said the company has been discussing the idea of a Husky-branded craft beer with the university for some time, and credited manager Jeff Delucia, a former UConn football co-captain, with moving the partnership forward.

The Husky Hops container will feature a closeup of “Jonathan the Husky,” the school’s mascot, in dark blue, offset by the product’s name in bold white lettering.
