Two women executives will join UConn Health’s top leadership team when CEO Dr. Andrew (“Andy”) Agwunobi takes over as University of Connecticut interim president later this year, Agwunobi announced Monday.

“This transition and this new arrangement will work for UConn Health,” Agwunobi said.

The UConn board announced last week that it had appointed Agwunobi interim president of the state’s flagship university after the abrupt resignation of Thomas Katsouleas.

At Monday’s meeting of UConn Health’s board of directors, Agwunobi named Caryl Ryan as interim chief operating officer of John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington. Ryan currently serves as chief nursing officer for UConn Health.

Anne Horbatuck, vice president for ambulatory services at UConn Health, was named interim COO of UConn Medical Group.

Ryan and Horbatuck, along with medical school Dean Dr. Bruce Liang and dental school Dean Steven Lepowsky, will work with Agwunobi to run UConn Health after Agwunobi takes on his new university-wide duties on July 1.

Radenka Maric, UConn's vice president for research, innovation and entrepreneurship, will also play a key role in running the health system, Agwunobi said.

“We’ll all work together — with that I feel like we are covered,” Agwunobi said.

Agwunobi also said he plans to work two days a week each in Farmington and Storrs as UConn president, with the fifth day in Stamford because it is a “a high-growth campus.”
