’Killer gig’ for the right entrepreneur

A year ago the New Haven Free Public Library launched its Ives Squared innovation space in the Elm Street main branch. In the 12 months since the launch, awareness and interest in Ives Squared has grown apace.

Now, to help take Ives Squared to the next level, the NHFPL announced that it will appoint an entrepreneur-in-residence (EIR) and a creative-in-residence (CIR) for the fall academic semester from September to January.

The role of the EIR and CIR is to help to connect New Haven residents with the people, tools and resources to develop and  advance their ideas — and to provide a gateway to other organizations and partners in the innovation ecosystem of the city. 

The residencies pay $2,000 a month — a “killer gig for the right person,” explains Ives Squared manager Gina Bingham.

The entrepreneur-In-residence, according to the library, “embodies the spirit of innovation and the transference of practical information.” Drawing on personal knowledge and his/her professional network, the EIR plans and manages workshops and classes; conducts one-on-one sessions to guide emerging entrepreneurs in the development/launch of concepts; and energizes an active community of inquisitive professionals to help foster the development of non-profit, for-profit and social enterprises.

The creative-In-residence helps to connect library users to local creatives, artists and makers with the New Haven community. The CIR will bring the Ives Squared Tinker Lab makerspace to life — sharing skills and knowledge by initiating workshops and classes, exploring ideas in a public context, and creating a collective project.

Located at the main branch library at 133 Elm Street, Ives Squared houses the Tinker Lab, which provides training and tools for creating and making. It is equipped with 3D printers, laser and vinyl cutters, Carvey CNC and more. It also houses the Exchange, an entrepreneurial and social space for collaboration and coworking. It is equipped with tech-enabled teaching tools such as a Hovercam digital podium, smartboard, five PC and five Mac laptops as well as a host of the latest business publications (including this one).

The library is now actively soliciting applications for the two positions. Interested individuals should review the guidelines and submit a completed application form (available at http://nhfpl.org/ives-squared/).  Applications must be returned by email by 5 p.m. on June 30. The library expects to make a determination on the  residency appointments by August 12.
