A New Haven architecture firm will be designing a large urban development in Stuttgart, Germany.

The firm, Pickard Chilton, based on Chapel Street, got the job after being invited to participate in an international competition. It was among about half a dozen firms and the only one from the United States to submit an entry. Pickard Chilton has worked on large-scale projects, including corporate headquarters, commercial office towers, hotels, and academic and health-care facilities around the country and overseas.

Global real estate firm Hines picked the firm for the Germany project.

William D. Chilton, principal of Pickard Chilton, said the project will allow the firm to “create a next-generation urban development.”

According to the company, the 1.4-million-square-foot project has been dubbed “Die Fuge,” or “The Seam.”

Anthony Markese, another principal with Pickard Chilton, said the Germany project covers an area similar to Yale University’s Old and Cross campuses combined.

“It is a significant project and will be built over multiple phases,” Markese said. “It will take about five to six years to build. We are responsible for the master plan and the design of the buildings and will oversee construction.”

“We are really happy and excited to be awarded this project,” Markese added.

It involves the creation of new office space, with buildings concentrated on the east and west sides of the development. It will have flexible and modular H-shaped office buildings. This creates exterior courtyards, which is convenient for drop-offs and provides space for bicycle storage and other amenities, according to the company.

The development also will feature extensive central public space.

“We are especially excited to create a new, inviting public space that will define this development,” Chilton said in an announcement. “The project will be integral to creating much needed civic space in the area, joining an already impressive list of public space alternatives in the city, including the Schlossgarten and Killesberg parks.”

The firm will incorporate the client’s environmental wishes for sustainable architecture. The company’s master plan and design include green roof terraces with integrated photovoltaic panels.

“The client has high aspirations for a green design, and we look forward to those concepts coming to fruition,” Markese said.

The development has a mixture of uses, including a hotel/boarding house, restaurants and cafés.

Pickard Chilton recently finished the Amegy Bank Tower in Houston, Tex.; BOK Park Plaza in Oklahoma City, Okla.; 1144 Fifteenth in Denver, Colo., and Eaton House in Dublin, Ireland. It has ongoing commercial and residential projects around the country and internationally, including in Japan.
