The Macy’s at the Brass Mill Center in Waterbury was nearly stripped bare this weekend, as shoppers had flocked there in recent weeks to get items on clearance before the anchor store’s closure.
Following a massive store liquidation, all that remained Sunday were piles of area rugs and jewelry behind glass cases. The long-familiar racks of clothes and home goods were gone. Even the racks themselves were being sold.
An announcer over the loudspeaker periodically reminded shoppers the deadline was fast approaching to finalize their purchases.
The store officially closed for business at the end of the day Sunday evening.
In January, Macy’s announced its plans to shutter two of its department stores in Connecticut, including at the Brass Mill Center and at the Crystal Mall in Waterford. They are among 37 stores set to close this year.
The company had sent customers an announcement about the planned closures and coupons in recent weeks.
Customers can still shop at other Macy’s in Connecticut, such as in Farmington at Westfarms Mall, in Milford at the Connecticut Post Mall, and at Westfield Trumbull mall.
In February, the company indicated it was accelerating its focus on digital and omnichannel sales, and noted that its digital sales for the fourth quarter of 2020 were up 21% compared to 2019.
Brookfield Properties, owner of the Brass Mill Center, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Macy’s departure or any prospective new tenants.
