Major wind project secures key federal approval

PHOTO | VINEYARD WIND Vineyard Wind is the nation's first utility-scale offshore wind energy project more than 14 miles off the coast of Massachusetts.

Park City Wind, a second major wind project put forward by Orange-based Avangrid, is a step closer to reality after getting a key approval from federal regulators.

The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) issued approval to go ahead with an environmental impact study for Park City Wind, an 804-megawatt offshore project under development by Avangrid Renewables and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.

“This is another important milestone for Avangrid’s portfolio of offshore wind projects,” said CEO Dennis Arriola. “We look forward to working with BOEM, the Lamont Administration, community leaders and our partners to successfully develop Park City Wind and deliver clean energy to our home state of Connecticut.”

If completed, Park City Wind would be the state’s largest offshore wind project and has a commitment from the state to buy its electricity.

The project is slated to be constructed in a federal lease area located over 60 miles east of the state’s coastline and would have the capacity to provide roughly 14% of Connecticut’s electricity supply.

Bridgeport was chosen as the home base of Park City Wind, with construction, storage and assembly of the wind turbines to be centered at Barnum Landing, a 15-acre parcel located at 525 Seaview Ave. About a dozen Park City Wind administrative workers are expected to be based at 350 Fairfield Ave.

BOEM completed a comprehensive study of Avangrid’s first wind venture, Vineyard Wind 1, in March and company officials said they expected the project to gain final approval by the end of the year. Once approved, that project could begin delivering electricity to Massachusetts by 2023.
