Manufacturers move at warp speed making medical products for COVID crisis

Two southern Connecticut manufacturing companies have introduced new products to address the unprecedented surge in demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) for health-care workers and others on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

Shelton’s Modern Plastics, which last month set up a new assembly line to produce face shields has now introduced a simple plastic tool to keep those annoying surgical-mask strings off the ears of wearers (that would be: all of us).

Made from high-density polyethylene, Mod-Clips hold mask strings in place behind the wearer’s head in a way designed to minimize abrasions, redness, discomfort and even cuts on the skin of those who must wear face masks for hours on end.

Modern Plastics, which in “normal” times makes medical- and engineering-grade plastic components of all types, is marketing the Mod-Clips for $10 for a 12-pack or 100 units for $75.

In Westbrook, the Lee Co. has partnered with General Motors and Ventec Life Systems to help mass-produce tens of thousands of ventilators needed for hospitals to treat the most critically ill coronavirus patients.

Lee, a manufacturer of miniature precision fluid-control products, has begun turning out precision orifices and check valves that the company says is critical to the operation of the ventilators.

Lee was already a certified supplier to GM, and the company says it has a “strong relationship” with the Seattle, Wash.-headquartered Ventec.

"I am proud of our team that responded to an 8 p.m. Friday inquiry with full mobilization, analysis of capabilities and availability of resources, and by Sunday afternoon had offered production delivery dates starting Monday,” said Lee President and CEO William Lee. “Outstanding effort!"
