Meriden health group starts partnership to provide cancer risk assessments

Midstate Radiology Associates LLC has partnered with Navagen Health Partners to provide patients with information about their genetic cancer risk.

Patients can perform a five-minute online cancer risk assessment on Midstate’s website, and then receive a breast cancer risk score via email. Patients may also fill out a paper questionnaire during a mammogram visit.

Patients with elevated risk can provide a saliva sample in-office or opt to have an at-home testing kit mailed to them. Once the sample is received, it takes about six weeks to analyze before a nurse practitioner reviews the results and discusses next steps with the patient in-person or virtually.

If a patient is found to be at increased risk for breast cancer, Midstate will connect the individual to a certified genetics counselor.

"This program is a life-changer,” said Meghan Burgess, director of Screening & Preventative Services at Midstate.

“When we identify women and their families at higher risk for cancer, there are things we can do to lower those risks or prevent the cancer from actually occurring,” Burgess said.

Midstate is taking steps to increase safety during the pandemic, including requiring everyone to wear masks. Staff and patients are screened at the door for any symptoms. Waiting rooms have been remodeled to promote social distancing, and Midstate plans to implement a mobile phone notification system so patients can wait in their cars until they are ready to be seen.

Midstate has locations around the state, including in Meriden, Cheshire and Wallingford.
