Representatives of local businesses and area colleges were guests at Meriden’s ACES Thomas Edison Middle School Wednesday for the school’s first ever “STEM-tastic Day.”
It was an opportunity for middle-school students to learn more about educational and career opportunities in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.
“One of our primary goals is to continue to be cutting edge and a growing part of our community so we invited businesses to come see what we are doing here and why STEM learning is so important for the students and local businesses,” explained Thomas Edison School Principal Karen Habegger. “We want to make sure we are in alignment with the business world and our community because it is important for our students to become productive citizens who give back to their communities and return to Connecticut to enter the workforce.”
Besides representatives from Southern Connecticut State University, Wesleyan University and the Boys & Girls Club of Meriden, managers from Allnex Resins, and Ulbrich Stainless Steel & Special Metals learned about how Thomas Edison educators are working with families and students to learn more about business and industry by bringing teachers in the classroom together with people out in the field.
An interdistrict magnet school with a focus on STEM education, the Thomas Edison School has some 720 students in grades 6 to 8.
