The operator of Mohegan Sun released an economic impact report Tuesday showing that the company’s properties in North America generated $5.2 billion in economic activity during 2019.
The study was conducted by the economic advisory firm Oxford Economics and looked at the impact of Mohegan’s gaming and entertainment venues on employment, household income, direct visitor spending, as well as state and local taxes, during 2019.
The analysis included Mohegan’s businesses in Uncasville along with Mohegan Pennsylvania in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; ilani in Ridgefield, Washington; Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey; and Niagara Casinos in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
The $5.2 billion in economic activity includes creating nearly 35,000 jobs and generating $2.7 billion in revenue from on-site and off-site sales from 15.7 million visitors.
“Mohegan is deeply-rooted in supporting the communities in which we operate and serve, and this new report makes clear the true scale of that impact across our critical partnerships, charitable giving, sustainability initiatives, funding infrastructure and direct contributions to state and local government revenues,” said James Gessner Jr., chairman of the Mohegan Tribe.
Also during 2019, Mohegan paid $759.3 million in state and local taxes, according to the study.
The company’s namesake Mohegan Sun casino and resort in Uncasville generated $1.2 billion in total direct spending, with a total economic impact of $2.2 billion on the local economy, according to the study. That money supported 14,699 jobs and netted $255.1 million in state and local tax revenue.
In addition, Mohegan Sun’s operational spending totaled $1.1 billion and visitor spending at off-site locations totaled $82.6 million.
Mohegan Sun saw 5.5 million visitors, who spent $82.6 million at off-site locations, the study shows. Of those, 57% traveled to Uncasville from outside the state, including from Boston and New York.
Seventy-three percent of visitors came for the day and 27% stayed overnight, according to the study. Visitors spent $20.9 million on lodging, $13.2 million on recreation, $9.1 million on retail and $4.1 million on local transportation.
The casino operator's second-most impactful casino was Niagara Casinos in Ontario.
It saw total direct spending of $609.3 million during 2019, along with $537 million in operational spending and $72.4 million in visitor off-site spending. The casino had a total economic impact of $1.3 billion.
Niagara Casinos had the second highest number of visitors after Mohegan Sun, with 3.6 million visitors during 2019. It was followed by 3.5 million visitors to Mohegan Pennsylvania with 3.5 million visitors; ilani in Ridgefield, Washington with 2.5 million visitors; and Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City with 583,000 visitors.
