The international MOOYAH Burgers, Fries & Shakes chain is adding a fourth restaurant in Connecticut this year.

New franchisees Kalpesh and Jignesh Patel, who are brothers-in-law, plan to open a new MOOYAH on the Boston Post Road in Guilford. Plans are for the new eatery to open in Guilford Commons, at 1919 Boston Post Road, this summer.

The Guilford location is among 14 new MOOYAH restaurants slated to debut around the country in 2020. Currently, the chain has three Connecticut eateries, including in West Haven, Newington and Storrs. The Texas-based company has a presence in 22 states, Canada and three countries in the Middle East.

Kalpesh Patel said they still need to get the space ready, and he estimates they’ll be ready to open around July or August.

“We have always had a passion for the food business and wanted to diversify our business portfolio,” Kalpesh Patel said. “Once you try this food, you will definitely come back because it tastes really good.”

The pair explored various different franchises before ultimately deciding on MOOYAH, as a family friend has one in Virginia.

“We tried everything, from the burgers to the shakes, and we fell in love with this brand,” said Jignesh Patel.

According to Kalpesh Patel, they looked at several location options, and ultimately settled on Guilford because of its proximity to I-95 and because it is an adequate distance away from other MOOYAH restaurants. It is also a mid-point for the pair, who live in Rocky Hill and Groton.

Between now and the opening, the Patels still need to have construction and remodeling work done to get ready.

The chain recently announced it has revamped its restaurant model. The redesign includes a more “modern vibe,” according to an announcement, with dining room seating zones, closed kitchens, digital menu boards, and dedicated third-party delivery and pickup shelving.

In announcing the chain’s expansion, Tony Darden, company president, said, “We could not be more proud to partner with our franchise owners.”

“They are the lifeblood of our organization, and we look forward to strengthening those relationships in our mission to bring MOOYAH’s high-quality and freshly prepared product to more markets in 2020,” Darden said in the announcement.

The chain was founded in 2007 and offers an array of beef, vegan and turkey burgers, hot dogs, fries and shakes.
