New York-based Asian market chain iFresh plans to open a new store in October at 804 Boston Post Rd. in Milford, the company confirmed on Friday.
The Chinese-cuisine-focused store is set to open on a 1.39-acre site that was once home to the popular M&M Farms produce market.
The iFresh chain's markets feature fresh seafood, Asian produce and an extensive selection of grocery items like soy sauce, rice, frozen dumplings and seasonings.
According to town records, the building on the property measures about 22,000 square feet and has been owned by NYM Milford LLC in Long Island City, N.Y., since 2015. The company is run by the family that operates iFresh and has been renovating the building on and off for years.
The Milford Health Department fined the property owners in 2018 for failing to cut weeds and repair scaffolding at the site, according to the New Haven Register.
The iFresh expansion comes amid trouble for the market’s parent company. Last month, the Securities and Exchange Commission charged iFresh, Inc. with filing inaccurate financial statements that failed to fully disclose some transactions connected to its CEO, Long Deng.
Deng’s attorney Jacob Frenkel of Dickinson Wright, PLLC, issued a response to the charges on Friday. “Mr. Deng looks forward to his day in court to fight vigorously the SEC’s allegations,” Frenkel said, adding that his client had relied on the advice of financial advisors and was not personally responsible for the alleged inaccuracies.
In the intervening years since iFresh began its plans, a major Asian grocery has debuted nearby at the Milford Plaza shopping center on Cherry Street. G Mart opened in 2021 in a former ShopRite at 155 Cherry St. and offers a wide selection of foods from China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and other Asian nations.
Milford Plaza has recently become a hub for Asian-inspired businesses, with a new liquor store offering a wide range of Asian spirits and an outpost of popular boba chain The Whale Tea.
