New city tourism and trade effort to focus on Avelo Air destinations

New Haven officials will be flying Avelo to spark new trade and tourism at the airline’s destinations, the city announced Wednesday.

Ginny Kozlowski, executive director of the Economic Development Corporation of New Haven, told the city’s development commission Wednesday morning that outreach will begin at the end of the month to boost trade and tourism with each of Avelo’s 14 destinations.

“One of the challenges for us is to introduce people to inbound travel into New Haven,” Kozlowski said.

The first trip is planned to Raleigh-Durham, N.C., set to become Avelo’s newest destination from Tweed New Haven Airport with flights starting on May 26. City officials and businesspeople are welcome to join the trip but must pay their own way, Kozlowski said.

“We'll spend a couple of days there and we'll meet with a variety of different people,” Kozlowski said. Economic development efforts will focus on Raleigh-Durham’s Research Triangle, which employs nearly 50,000 people over its 7,000 acres.

“We're going to try to touch on as much as we can introduce ourselves and introduce New Haven as a place to visit, but also to do business,” Kozlowski said.

A second trip, to Chicago in the fall, is in the planning stages and will be scheduled around the International Manufacturing Technology Show. Avelo begins flights to Chicago’s Midway Airport on May 26.

Avelo hosts East Haven job fair

Avelo also announced this week it would be hosting a job fair at East Haven’s Hagaman Memorial Public Library on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The airline has said it would be hiring 50 more people in the next six months as it expands routes and destinations. A total of 150 people are currently employed by the airline based from New Haven, its primary East Coast hub.

East Haven Mayor Joseph Carfora said, "Job fairs like this one that engage our citizens are always positive.” Carfora has said he would oppose Tweed's plans to build a new terminal for Avelo on the East Haven side of the airport's property.

Avelo's Head of People Jim Lynde said, "We are delighted by Mayor Carfora’s invitation to host a spring job fair in the Town of East Haven.”
