New England grid regulator: Consumer demand to grow slightly over next 10 years

ISO New England, the organization that oversees the region’s bulk electric power system, expects energy use to tick up by about 1.6% per year over the next decade, fueled in part by the electrification of transportation and building heating systems.

In a recent forecast, the operator predicted that energy use from the six states under its jurisdiction — Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine — would grow from 140,836 gigawatt-hours this year to 165,116 GWh in 2030.

At least some of that increase will likely come from the accelerating adoption of light-duty electric vehicles, the report states, as well as the growing popularity of heat pumps, which are used to heat buildings and homes.

Within 10 years, ISO New England expects the region to add about 1 million electric vehicles, including over 166,000 in Connecticut if current adoption trends continue. By 2030, about 0.5% of Connecticut’s gross monthly electricity consumption could be going to electric vehicles, translating to about 400 megawatts monthly.

Connecticut is currently aiming to put between 125,000 and 150,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2025 in a bid to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
