New Haven studio welcomes aspiring artists

A new generation of Picassos, Michelangelos or Andy Warhols might soon be emerging right here in New Haven.

NXTHVN, an international art institution on Dixwell Avenue, recently announced its annual class of aspiring artists to join its Cohort 04 Studio and Curatorial Fellows program.

The selected students, who hail from New Haven to Nigeria, will embark on a 10-month program of education, mentorship and hands-on training starting on Aug. 22 at NXTHVN’s 40,000-square-foot campus. 

Students will cultivate their craft with 24-hour access to studio space, while having a place to live in on-site housing. The program culminates with students displaying their work in a prominent art gallery.

During the course of the program, the fellows receive stipends of $35,000 or $45,000, made possible by donations, grants, family foundations and other sources.

The 2022-2023 class members represent various cultural backgrounds that include African-American, Dominican, Honduran, Native American, Nigerian, Peruvian and German, with disciplines ranging from sculpture and painting to installation and collage.

The studio fellows include Anindita Dutta, a sculptor from New York City; Modupeola Fadugba, a multimedia artist from Nigeria/Philadelphia; Donald Guevara, a multimedia artist from Florida; Ashanté Kindle, a multimedia artist from Hartford; athena quispe, an artist and poet from New Haven; Edgar Serrano, a painter from New Haven; and Capt. James Stovall V, a self-taught artist, philosopher and jazz player from California. The curatorial fellows are Cornelia Stokes, a curator from New York, and Kiara Cristina Ventura, a curator and writer from New York City. 

NXTHVN Co-Founder and President Titus Kaphar is excited to welcome the incoming class.

“NXTHVN is honored to work with and learn from the international artists and curators that participate in our programs,” Kaphar said. “Each facet of the institution - education and investment - is dedicated to the success of artists long-term.”

NXTHVN Director of Programs and Exhibitions Kalia Brooks called the group a “talented and diverse group.”

“Each year NXTHVN’s Fellowship serves as a springboard for artist careers, empowering creatives to explore and evolve through participation in critiques, tailored curriculum and networking,” Brooks said.

In addition to honing their own skills, the fellows dedicate 13 hours a month to mentoring New Haven high school students, who are part of NXHVN’s apprentice program.

Since its founding in 2018 by Kaphar and private equity investor Jason Price, who are both longtime New Haven residents, NXTHVN has helped artists of all skill levels and backgrounds come together to make art, advance their techniques and perspectives, and launch their careers in the field.
