The upcoming opening of a new $210 million ground transportation center at Bradley International Airport was celebrated Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Planning and construction took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the facility is expected to open in mid-July, according to the Connecticut Airport Authority, which runs the self-funded airport.

The new center will provide improved access to rental cars, more parking and future links to public transit. The 13.4-acre expansion includes a dedicated area that, in the future, will handle buses connecting the airport to the CTRail line, which runs from Hartford to New Haven, as well as regional bus services.

Gov. Ned Lamont said the transportation center will improve the “passenger experience.”

“Those of us who live in Connecticut know how convenient it is to fly in and out of Bradley,” Lamont said. “It was one of our best-kept secrets, but now that secret is out. This new facility, built without the use of taxpayer funds, is key to Bradley’s position as an essential economic driver for our state and is already helping to bring new airlines and destinations that benefit our residents and businesses.”

Connecticut Airport Authority Board of Directors Chairman Tony Sheridan said construction is “on time and on budget,” despite the pandemic.

The facility sports a modern design with striking artwork across its four floors. It’s intended to  streamline operations, save time for passengers and improve access to public transportation while eliminating traffic congestion.

The center includes rental car service operations for nine brands and 830 new public parking spaces - a 10% increase.

There’s also a sheltered walking area from the main terminal, Terminal A, which leads to the rental cars.

The facility is expected to eliminate more than 250,000 shuttle trips per year, the airport said. There will be more than 50 electric vehicle charging stations.
