If your venue was shuttered due to the coronavirus, federal grant money can help.

The U.S. Small Business Administration recently launched a splash page for the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) application portal.

The agency will begin accepting applications for the relief program on Thursday, April 8. It can help an array of businesses, such as movie theaters, theatrical venues and museums which have been adversely impacted by the pandemic and resulting capacity restrictions.

SBA Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman said in an announcement that help is available for venue operators hit hard by the pandemic.

“The SBA knows these venues are critical to America's economy and understands how hard they've been impacted, as they were among the first to shutter,” Casillas Guzman said. “This vital economic aid will provide a much-needed lifeline for live venues, museums, movie theatres and many more.”

More than $16 billion is available for grants through the program. It was established by the Economic Aid to Hard Hit Small Businesses, Nonprofits and Venues Act, which appropriated $15 billion for it. President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act into law on March 11, which provides an additional $1.25 billion, bringing the total to $16.25 billion.

Applicants must register with the federal government’s System for Award Management (SAM.gov), a requirement to receive the grant.

To help interested business owners with the process, the SBA is hosting an informational webinar on the application process on Tuesday, March 30 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. It will cover topics such as what documentation is needed, eligibility requirements and how to apply.
