Newman's Own Inc., the Westport-based food company founded by the late actor Paul Newman, has a new president and CEO, David Best.
The company, which gives 100 percent of its profits to charity, is well-known for its products, which range from salad dressing to frozen pizza, cookies, beverages and pet food.
Its board of directors elected Best, 52, who has been at the company for nine years. Prior to his promotion, he had served as president and chief operating officer since 2015.
Best called it a “tremendous honor” to lead the company and advance Newman’s philanthropic mission. The company reports that it has donated more than $560 million to charities since 1982, such as organizations helping veterans, children, animals and the environment.
"I am committed to working with our employees and partners to drive sustainable long-term growth to support the great work of Newman's Own Foundation," Best said.
Best
During Best’s career, he also has had leadership positions at companies such as General Mills, Atkins and Unilever.
In choosing Best, the board noted his commitment to strengthening the business’ brand and increasing the foundation’s revenues.
Best will lead all commercial activities, including the food company, licensing operations and planned expansion of the trademark.
Meanwhile, Miriam E. Nelson has been picked to serve as president and CEO of Newman’s Own Foundation.
Newman formed the independent, private foundation in 2005. Nelson has been serving as acting president and CEO for the past year.
Nelson
According to Nelson, she has long been inspired by Newman’s model of a business giving profits away to good causes.
"His compassion for children facing adversity resonates with me,” Nelson said in an announcement. To be able to draw on my experience to further the mission of the Foundation is truly an honor."
