Dandelion Energy has announced it’s purchased Durham-based Glacier Drilling as the company continues to expand its presence in the state.

Dandelion, a New York-based geothermal home heating and cooling installer, announced this month it has acquired geothermal drilling company Glacier Drilling. Glacier Drilling has been offering drilling and related services to the state for 26 years, company officials said.

Dandelion Energy CEO Michael Sachse said the acquisition helps his company expand and mobilize in New England and other Northeastern markets. Financial terms were not available.

In March, the HBJ reported that Dandelion leased 21,000 square feet at 460 Hayden Station Road, Windsor, to act as the company's first operations center in Connecticut.

Dandelion began offering installation services to homeowners in the state in 2020.

Sachse told HBJ at the time that finding well drillers to do installations was a particular challenge because there aren’t many active in the state. The state’s licensing requirements for drilling professionals is rigorous, he said, and the company had been using subcontractors as it waited for its own drillers to get licensed.

The acquisition of Glacier helps Dandelion with that part of the business.

In February 2021, Dandelion raised a $30 million Series B investment round led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures. Breakthrough’s investors include Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Connecticut's wealthiest resident Ray Dalio and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
