PatientWisdom Inc., a New Haven-based digital health company, is expanding its product into the Pennsylvania market.

On Tuesday, the company announced that WellSpan Health, based in York, Pa., will be using its technology, which aims to improve patient and provider communication and overall patient experience.

Gregory Makoul, MD, founder and CEO of PatientWisdom, said his company is proud to support WellSpan’s “effort to focus on healing relationships instead of health transactions.”

“WellSpan understands that improving communication leads to very tangible benefits for everyone involved,” Makoul said in an announcement. “Our goal is to make it easier for every member of the care team to provide patients with even better care without taking longer.”

When using the technology, patients provide information about themselves before meeting with a physician or health-care provider. They can provide a range of information — including their medical background, eating habits, health concerns, interests and more.

Health-care providers are typically busy, with multiple patients to see on a daily basis, according to PatientWisdom. The technology helps provide a snapshot into a patient’s life and concerns, and aims ultimately to improve overall patient-provider communication and care.

PatientWisdom’s technology is HIPAA-compliant and enables patients to securely share information about themselves, their health and care before their visit. The technology distills information provided by the patient into an “at-a-glance” summary for health-care providers to review.

Patients can also use the product to give feedback on any issues during their visit, such as waiting time or waiting room atmosphere.

The Yale New Haven Health system is among the medical providers using the technology.

WellSpan is first launching its PatientWisdom system at five practices in central Pennsylvania, though it plans to eventually use it across its entire network. Initially, it will be available at WellSpan’s family medicine, internal medicine and obstetrics/gynecology practices.

PatientWisdom also offers technology such as ProviderWisdom, which obtains insights from clinicians and staff to enhance engagement, address burnout and streamline care, and CommunityWisdom, which produces community insights for health organizations.
