Pickleville plan approved for Westville

A new pickleball facility project planned for the Westville section of New Haven has won approval from the city Plan Commission at its meeting this week. 

Harrison Blume, founder of Pickleville CT, said he now has the green light to get building permits for his 8,100-square-foot building at 1 Valley St. The project, Blume said, is a  “multimillion-dollar investment,” with three indoor pickleball courts, a coffee/smoothie bar and lounge/office area.

The location is currently a parking lot at Blake Street and Whalley Avenue in the Westville section, across from the former 500 Blake Street banquet facility where a mixed-use project with 130 new apartments and retail sites is planned.

Pickleball, a mix of tennis and ping pong, has become a popular sport suitable for most ages and abilities. This would be the city’s first indoor pickleball facility, and easily accessible for drivers, bicyclists or walkers, Blume said.

“We’ve been getting a lot of positive response to the plan, people are really excited to have a new recreational facility in the city and it’ll bring a lot of business to the Westville village,” he said. “Not only can people come to play here, but walk around afterwards to grab a cup of coffee, or get lunch or dinner.”

Blume is hoping for construction to start this winter, with an opening planned for late spring.  He is looking to hire several employees, including pickleball pros and social media ambassadors.
