Planned Parenthood shutters Old Saybrook health clinic

Connecticut nonprofits have been vocal about their dire financial straits in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a Planned Parenthood clinic in Old Saybrook is the latest casualty of the economic fallout from the virus.

Planned Parenthood of Southern New England announced Friday that it was closing its Old Saybrook health center and another in Danielson due to “the unprecedented economic impact of COVID-19.”

“We have been forced to make hard choices to conserve resources and reduce costs to preserve our ability to continue providing health care today and into the future,” CEO and President Amanda Skinner said in a statement.

The closing did not result in any layoffs. Staff from the two centers will continue to serve patients at other Planned Parenthood clinics, Skinner said.

She said Planned Parenthood would continue to serve Old Saybrook and Danielson patients through telehealth, in-person visits at nearby health centers and through the organization’s education and advocacy efforts.

“We’re still here for our patients,” Skinner said. “Through telehealth, we can meet our patients wherever they are and eliminate some of the traditional barriers to access, including lack of transportation and the need to take time off work or arrange childcare.”

Planned Parenthood of Southern New England serves 78,000 patients a year at 15 health centers in Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Anyone needing care can call 1-800-230-PLAN or visit ppsne.org to find their nearest health center, learn more about telehealth and schedule an appointment.
