Are you a small-business owner or entrepreneur who has been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic?

If so, you probably could use some legal advice, and a new free program can help.

The Connecticut Bar Association is sponsoring a statewide COVID-19 Small Business Virtual Legal Clinic, in which volunteer attorneys will provide free, limited-scope legal guidance during 45-minute telephone or video calls.

The clinic is expected to run through August of this year.

CBA President Ndidi N. Moses said the effort aims to support Connecticut-based small businesses and entrepreneurs who have had their livelihoods upended as a result of the pandemic.

“We hope that the legal guidance that results from this clinic will help Connecticut employers and their employees and families during these unprecedented times,” Moses said, in an announcement.

To qualify, a business must have 25 or fewer employees. It is an opportunity to get information about assistance available under federal and state programs, including loans and grants. Participants may ask questions on various legal topics, such as the CARES Act, Paycheck Protection Program, contracts and force majeure clauses, as well as matters related to employment, real estate, commercial leasing and insurance law.

The clinic is part of a nationwide program organized by the Lawyers for Good Government Foundation.

The Hartford-based law firm Robinson+Cole is serving as the launch and management partner. Several other law firms — including Aeton Law Partners, Axinn Veltrop & Harkrider, Day Pitney, Finn Dixon & Herling, McCarter & English, Murtha Cullina, and Shipman & Goodwin — are also participating.
