A Hamden company, Giering Metal Finishing Inc., recently completed an 1,800-square-foot addition designed to improve production and energy efficiency at its State Street headquarters.

The business did the project with assistance from the Hamden Business Incentives program.

Dale Kroop, program director, said the company received a $3,000 grant, a partial waiver of building permit fees, and a 50 percent abatement of taxes for three years based on the amount of the improvements.

The company has its headquarters on State Street in Hamden and a plant on Swift Place in Waterbury. It does electrocoating, powder and paint coating, conversion coating, silk screening, masking, packaging and assembly.

George Giering, president of the third generation family business, said the company has two adjacent buildings in Hamden, and one of these had old enclosures toward the back.

The business tore down these old enclosures and added a fully insulated and more energy efficient building. The business needed to do something to reduce its energy bills, which jumped significantly in the winter. Its total Hamden location comprises some 85,000 square feet, according to the company’s website.

“The renovation was a perfect opportunity to replace the existing worn structure with an updated, sturdier, more energy efficient building,” Giering said.

Originally established in the 1930s and incorporated in 1954, the company serves several industries, such as military, automotive, manufacturing, commercial, aircraft and retail.

According to Giering, the Hamden facility operates a significant portion of the company’s automated finishing equipment. The renovation and expansion project cost the company about $450,000.

Changes and upgrades included raising the roof elevation, removing room dividers, updating lighting, and improving fire suppression, electrical service, ventilation, circulation and insulation.

The business has also added a full-time employee and two temporary employees.

Hamden Mayor Curt Balzano Leng said investment and expansion is a good sign for the town.

According to Kroop, the incentive program has been in place for over 20 years and helps businesses of all types.

“Manufacturing is a key industry in town, and we have been able to keep our manufacturing cluster going through our incentive program,” Kroop said.
