The state Senate voted Friday to reappoint John W. “Jack” Betkoski III as a commissioner with the state Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, the agency that oversees the rates and services of Connecticut’s investor-owned electricity, natural gas, water and telecommunications companies.
The unanimous vote, which followed a similarly favorable decision from the state House of Representatives, extends Betkoski’s term to June 30, 2023. According to PURA officials, he will begin his 25th year with the agency on July 1, making him the third-longest-serving utilities commissioner in the country.
“Jack’s lifelong dedication to public service is commendable, and I am pleased to continue serving the state alongside him,” said PURA Chairman Marissa P. Gillett. “His leadership, particularly in leading the adoption and implementation of the first-ever state water plan, is tremendous.”
Betkoski joined what was then the Department of Public Utility Control as a commissioner in 1997. He was elected vice chairman of the agency in 2007 and again in 2011, when the agency was reorganized as the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority.
Betkoski, a Beacon Falls resident, also serves as chairman of the Connecticut Water Planning Council.
