Report: CT top destination for people moving due to COVID-19

Connecticut has become a hotspot for people moving as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new survey, which seems to confirm a trend that’s been talked about since the spring of New York City residents fleeing to the state’s less congested suburbs.

United Van Lines, the nation’s largest household goods mover, found that 20% of its customers who moved to the Nutmeg State between March and August, did so due to COVID-19. That made Connecticut the third-highest inbound state -- behind Vermont and North Dakota -- where coronavirus was a contributing factor in choosing to migrate. 

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Washington, D.C. and New York were the top states people moved away from as a result of the pandemic, the survey said.

The survey results provide more evidence of a migration shift that has occurred in certain parts of the country, where some people in densely populated cities hard hit by the pandemic have fled to the suburbs or less congested areas. 

Connecticut has become an attractive landing spot because of its proximity to New York City, which was hit especially hard early in the pandemic, and its largely suburban makeup.

That’s led to a red-hot residential real estate market that has pushed Connecticut home prices up significantly so far in 2020, and created bidding wars for many properties -- both trends not seen in the state in years.
