The CEO of a Japanese apparel giant joined New Haven city officials on Thursday to cut the ribbon on the newest J. Press flagship store, marking a new start for the veteran retailer.
Michinobu Yasumoto, president and CEO of J. Press New Haven’s parent company Owning Holdings, helped debut the new store at 262 Elm St., around the corner from its longtime location on York.
Richard Press, a grandson of founder Jacobi Press, was also present at the event..
J. Press first opened the doors in May at the new store, a 1,780-square-foot building with two floors of retail space, a full-service tailor shop, administrative offices and an e-commerce distribution center.
The menswear brand was founded by Jacobi Press at 262 York St. in 1902, but that historic building had to be demolished after heavy snow from 2013’s Winter Storm Nemo weakened the structure. The Elm street location is the new flagship for the brand, which has stores in New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, and Cambridge, Mass.
