Sacred Heart Univ., HHC partner on healthcare workforce development efforts

Sacred Heart University and Hartford HealthCare have announced a partnership to provide clinical training and development opportunities for students pursuing careers in nursing and health care, including hands-on experience at Hartford HealthCare facilities.

Under the agreement, Hartford HealthCare and Sacred Heart will launch a new scholarship and a medical certificate program, while improving instructional and placement opportunities, according to the announcement.

The agreement is meant to help provide a pipeline for Hartford HealthCare workers and address the shortage of healthcare professionals.

“This expanded relationship could not happen at a better time, especially with the shortage of health professionals, qualified educators and clinical training opportunities here in Connecticut and around the country,” SHU President John J. Petillo said. 

The agreement creates opportunities for Sacred Heart students pursuing BSN and APRN nursing degrees, along with those studying emergency and internal medicine, primary care, psychiatry, neuropsychology and women’s health.

It will also create new opportunities for students interested in becoming physician assistants, physical and occupational therapists, radiographers and other types of diagnostic imaging technicians.

Hartford HealthCare will donate $125,000 per year over the next four years to help provide and expand advanced simulation technology and techniques at Sacred Heart. Also, Hartford HealthCare will make a one-time $100,000 donation to create a named scholarship aimed at underserved students interested in nursing, allied health or behavioral health.

The two organizations celebrated their agreement Thursday at Sacred Heart’s East Building atrium at West Campus.
