The sparkling white sands of Sarasota on Florida’s Gulf Coast will be only hours away come winter thanks to Avelo Airlines’ newest flight from New Haven, announced on Thursday.

Avelo will offer nonstop flights to Sarasota Bradenton International Airport from Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN) three days a week starting on Jan. 13, making the city its sixth destination in the Sunshine State. Introductory fares in limited numbers to Sarasota start at $49.

Flights to Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando and Tampa start on Nov. 3, while flights to Palm Beach start on Dec. 16.

“With our very low fares and HVN’s unmatched convenience, we hope to inspire our Connecticut customers to visit all six Florida destinations Avelo serves. We can’t wait to take off for the Sunshine State in two weeks,” Avelo Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said in a statement.

Avelo’s new flights are the cornerstone of an expansion plan for Tweed, a $100 million project that would extend the runway and build a new terminal to handle increased passenger traffic.

Despite ongoing neighborhood opposition to the expansion plan, the New Haven Board of Alders approved a new lease for the airport in September that would allow for the makeover.

Avelo's low-cost fares and New Haven base serves unmet demand in the market, according to Jorge Roberts, CEO of Tweed operator Avports.
