The site of the future School of Business building at Southern Connecticut State University is now just a hole in the ground filled with construction workers, but it will shortly be where future business leaders are trained for success.

On Friday morning, SCSU leaders joined hundreds of guests for a formal groundbreaking ceremony for the new building, which is being constructed near the intersection of Farnham and Wintergreen avenues.

“This will be an expansive new building, offering the latest in technology,” said SCSU President Joe Bertolino. “It will equip our students to be leaders in business and society.”

According to Bertolino, approximately 85% of SCSU’s graduates live, work and pay taxes here in Connecticut after graduation.

“An investment in Southern is an investment in our state,” Bertolino said.

The new four-story, 60,000-square-foot facility is expected to be finished by early 2023, he said.

At a price of $52.4 million, it is expected to more than double the space for the university’s business students. It will feature nine general classrooms, plus specialized classrooms and lecture halls. It will have a behavioral lab area with an observation room, a community room for up to 100 people, a large classroom and administrative suite for the MBA program, and an area for financial market and data analytics, according to SCSU.

Jennifer Robin, dean of the School of Business, thanked everyone involved in making the project come to fruition. The new building will provide a home for SCSU’s “hardworking and inspiring learners,” she said.

“The new building will give us a sense of place for our students, rather than being spread out throughout the campus,” Robin said. “It will foster better communication and create better opportunities for experiential learning.”

The building will include office space for the dean, faculty, and staff, and will feature a stock market ticker visible from outside. It is also designed to be environmentally friendly, or net-zero in terms of carbon emissions.

The school recently received a $500,000 gift made through the Amour Propre Fund to establish the School of Business Endowment for Leadership Development. Lindy Lee Gold, president of Amour Propre and a member of both the SCSU Foundation board of directors and the school’s Business Advisory Council, made the gift to enhance and expand programs. SCSU plans to establish the Lindy Lee Gold Business Leadership Suite in the new building.
