Southern Connecticut State University obtained accreditation status for its School of Business on Thursday.

The Florida-based accrediting agency, AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) International, announced SCSU was among seven additional schools worldwide that had earned accreditation in business education.

The others included American University of Ras Al Khaimah (in the United Arab Emirates); College of Management, National Taiwan Normal University; Palm Beach Atlantic University; School of Business at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong; School of Economics and Management, Shanghai Maritime University; and the University of Cyprus.

SCSU is now among 989 institutions in 62 countries and territories that have earned AACSB accreditation in business education.

“The School of Business is happy to join its academic peers that have demonstrated their commitment to overall high-quality management education and a core conviction to advance their mission by way of attaining this distinctive credential,” said Jess Boronico, dean of SCSU's School of Business.

SCSU officials have said they have faced competition for students from other area accredited business programs, particularly UConn, Quinnipiac University, the University of New Haven, Sacred Heart University and Central Connecticut State University.

Stephanie M. Bryant, executive vice president and chief accreditation officer of AACSB, said accreditation “recognizes institutions that have demonstrated a focus on excellence in all areas, including teaching, research, curriculum development and student learning.”

“We congratulate each of the newly accredited institutions for earning this respected honor,” Bryant said.

Achieving accreditation typically takes several years, during which time schools implement a plan to align with AACSB’s accreditation standards.

Schools work with an AACSB-assigned mentor and undergo an extensive peer-reviewed evaluation.

“Today’s students are tomorrow’s business leaders, and the addition of these seven institutions to the network of AACSB-accredited business schools will have a lasting positive impact, both locally and globally,” said Bryant.

SCSU in recent years has taken multiple steps to secure accreditation for its School of Business, including a new $52.4 million, four-story building which doubles the business school’s available space. Workers are finishing construction on that building this month. The university has also hired additional business faculty and expanded its business-related class offerings.
