Wheeler Clinic says it’s set to takeover an outpatient behavioral health clinic operated by St. Mary’s Hospital, a division of Trinity Health of New England, in Waterbury.

The Connecticut Office of Health Strategy recently OK’d a request from St. Mary’s to transition the facility to Plainville-based Wheeler, which provides behavioral health and primary care services, sometime in September.
Wheeler’s proposed expansion in Waterbury was approved by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration in January.

Wheeler, which operates outpatient outfits in New Britain, Hartford and Bristol, this week announced plans to transform the Waterbury facility at 100 Jefferson Square into a new “Family Health & Wellness Center.”

It plans to continue providing behavioral health services currently available at the St. Mary’s clinic, including intensive outpatient, behavioral health outpatient and psychiatric services, among others. There are no planned reductions in services there, Wheeler said.

“Wheeler is uniquely positioned to address the unmet need for integrated primary care and behavioral health services in Waterbury, particularly among adults with serious mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders,” said Wheeler CEO and President Susan Walkama.

“This population is often reluctant to seek primary care, experiences disparities in access to health care, and generally has poorer health outcomes,” Walkama continued.
