Starling Physicians discloses patient data breach

Rocky Hill-based Starling Physicians P.C. on Tuesday disclosed that patient data, including medical information and social security numbers, was breached in a cyber phishing attack earlier this year.

Starling released a statement Tuesday afternoon saying the attack apparently happened on Feb. 8. An investigation in September found that breached data included some patients’ names, addresses, dates of birth, passport numbers, Social Security numbers, medical information and health insurance or billing information.

The company didn’t give an exact number for how many patients were affected, but said less than 0.01 percent of them had information breached.

“Upon learning of the incident, we promptly secured the email accounts to prevent further access,” Starling’s statement said. “We also retained a leading forensic security firm to investigate and conduct a comprehensive search for any personal information in the impacted accounts.”

Starling said it notified all its patients of the breach on Tuesday, and offered those whose social security numbers were stolen complimentary credit monitoring. Starling also advised patients to keep an eye out for unauthorized activity like insurance claims they never filed, or issues with their bank accounts and credit cards.
