Stop & Shop supermarket on Saturday announced that it was suspending at-home grocery delivery and curtailing store hours so its employees can restock empty shelves for customers.
The Massachusetts-based grocery store chain, which has about 10 shopping centers in Connecticut, said it has no plans to close stores but will curtail hours so that employees can unload deliveries and stock shelves amid significant customer demand for all sorts of goods ranging from cleaning products to perishable and non-perishable foods.
Many shoppers in Connecticut and across the country have rushed to grocery stores in recent days to stock up on goods amid fears of the coronavirus spreading, particularly in the wake many school closures and other restrictions being put in place by the state and federal government.
Most Stop & Shop stores will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. beginning Monday, March 16, until further notice.
Stop & Shop is also suspending its online pickup service until further notice.
“We recognize that online shoppers may be experiencing delays on our website as well as with our delivery times,” the company said in a statement. “This is again due to extremely high demand, and our teams are working incredibly hard to ensure the site is running smoothly so that you can continue to receive orders when you need them.”
The store added that it is “continuing to maintain high levels of hygiene and sanitation in its stores and online operations. We’re also taking additional measures during this time, which include wiping down checkout areas including the belts and pin pads with disinfectant even more frequently. We will continue to follow guidance from the CDC to help keep our customers and associates safe.”
