Substance abuse organization reports data privacy breach

An organization that helps people with alcohol and substance abuse problems throughout southeastern Connecticut has issued a warning of a “data privacy event.”

The Southeastern Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Inc., or SCADD, is based in Lebanon. According to the organization, certain personal information may have been compromised. However, so far, it has not received any reports of such information being misused.

“The confidentiality, privacy and security of information is one of SCADD's highest priorities and the organization takes this matter seriously,” the organization said in an announcement.

SCADD noticed a problem in mid-February and launched an investigation, which included a review by third-party forensic experts. The organization determined that its systems had been infected with ransomware.

While SCADD reported that it found “no evidence” that anyone gained access to any clients’ personal information, the organization indicated “the possibility exists,” so it has issued a warning as a precaution.

The organization has individuals’ names, addresses, Social Security numbers, medical history, and treatment information on the systems affected by the data privacy event.

In addition to a general notice, SCADD is reaching out to its clients and offering them access to free credit monitoring and identity protection services. The organization also recommends that its clients monitor account statements and credit reports for any evidence of identity theft or fraud.

For more information about the breach and security measures to take, visit the organization’s website at www.scadd.org. A special assistance line has been set up for anyone with questions about the incident, at 1-800-494-5419.
