Subway cuts 100 jobs at Milford HQ, part of global pandemic layoffs

Subway has announced another wave of layoffs, the second this year for the restaurant franchise giant.

Alan Marcus, senior director of public relations, said this week the company has reduced its global workforce by approximately 150 employees, which includes more than 100 workers at its Milford headquarters.

This is in addition to the roughly 300 workers who lost their jobs back in February

According to Marcus, in addition to this latest round of layoffs, the company has also reassigned some staff “for better alignment and efficiencies.”

Marcus cited the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and its negative impact on business, as a factor in the decision. In Connecticut, Gov. Ned Lamont ordered restaurants to close, except for takeout, and this week, has started to allow outdoor dining.

“A reduction in workforce is never an easy decision, especially during these unprecedented times,” Marcus said, via an emailed statement. “The Covid-19 pandemic has forced us to accelerate a restructuring plan for which we had been preparing.”

“Our focus remains on ensuring Subway guests continue to get great service and value at every restaurant they visit; our franchise owners, all small business owners, get the full support and tools they need to help them grow and be successful; and that we strengthen our overall business performance,” Marcus said.

Each Subway restaurant is locally owned and operated.

The company has seen several changes in upper management in recent months. New CEO John Chidsey, formerly Burger King’s CEO, started at the Milford headquarters in mid-November.

Subway, which first launched in Bridgeport in 1965, has seen sales fall and stores close in recent years.

The company has taken steps to address the current health crisis and keep franchises open and operating, such as offering contactless delivery and takeout. Company leaders have indicated they have enhanced procedures, including hourly restaurant cleanings and outfitting employees with masks and protective shields.
