Subway mulls move to Fairfield County to ‘modernize’ HQ

Milford-based Subway is contemplating a move to Northeastern Fairfield County as it seeks to modernize its corporate headquarters, the company confirmed Tuesday.

The international chain, which operates about 20,000 restaurants in the U.S. alone, bases its “world headquarters” at 325 Sub Way in Milford. Fred DeLuca founded the company in Bridgeport in 1965.

“Subway is exploring options in Northeastern Fairfield County to create a world-class work environment for our employees,” a company spokesperson said.

The move’s goal would be “a modernized headquarter location, featuring an engaging and welcoming workspace and wide range of on-site amenities,” the spokesperson added.

Milford Mayor Benjamin Blake told the Hartford Courant on Monday that the move would not result in job losses in the city.

“As a member of the community for nearly 50 years, we look forward to strengthening our long-term commitment to the area,” the Subway spokesperson said.

Subway said last month it would be hiring 50,000 people in June as part of a nationwide recruitment effort. After a pandemic downturn, Subway reported sales gains last year, crediting its recent "Eat Fresh Refresh" ad campaign.
