Milford-based restaurant chain Subway is overhauling its menu and making digital changes aimed at improving customers’ experience, the company announced Tuesday.
The company billed the changes as the biggest in its history and dubbed it the “Eat Fresh Refresh.”
More than 10,000 participating restaurants across the country will close at 6 p.m. ET on July 12 for a “Refresh Break,” then will reopen with the revamped menu on Tuesday, July 13.
The changes include 20 menu updates, which range from new ingredients to signature sandwiches. Among the changes — two new fresh-baked breads —- Artisan Italian and Hearty Multigrain, and ingredients like rotisserie-style chicken, fresh mozzarella and smashed avocado. New sandwiches to debut include the Turkey Cali Fresh, Steak Cali Fresh and All-American Club.
When the restaurants reopen on July 13, Subway will give away up to one million free sandwiches, a Turkey Cali Fresh sub, from 10 a.m. to noon, EST.
Trevor Haynes, president North America at Subway, said the goal is to give Subway’s guests “more new and improved flavors.”
"Our new culinary team is delivering monumental updates to the entire core menu,” Haynes said in an announcement. “The Eat Fresh Refresh makes Subway better than ever with freshly made, craveable and delicious sandwiches to excite new and returning guests."
Subway indicated it has no plans to change its tuna sandwich, the subject of recent controversy and allegations that the chain isn’t using real tuna, a claim the chain denies.
“The 100% wild-caught tuna remains a fan favorite among sub lovers,” the announcement said.
The chain is also working to make the digital ordering experience easier for customers. The updated Subway App has a new dashboard aimed at improving ordering. Guests can order delivery via the app, Subway.com and third-party delivery vendors.
In-person guests will find new designs and remodeled restaurants too, according to the chain.
Subway, which is based at 325 Sub Way in Milford, says it has nearly 40,000 restaurants around the globe, with each owned and operated by franchisees.
