Connecticut surpasses most states for proportion of population carrying health insurance.

So says the personal-finance website WalletHub, which on Thursday released results of a survey ranking the Nutmeg State No. 7 nationally for lowest percentage of citizens (5.3 percent) not covered by health insurance. The state with the lowest proportion of uninsured residents was neighboring Massachusetts, where just 2.77 percent of residents are uncovered.

The state with the most uninsured residents, according to WalletHub, is Texas, where 17.71 percent of residents have no insurance coverage. Nationwide 42 states had a higher percentage of uninsured residents than Connecticut.

Nationally, the rate of adults without health insurance rose in 2018 to 8.5 percent from 7.9 percent the previous year, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. This marked the first year there was an increase since the Affordable Care Act (ACA, a/k/a Obamacare) took effect.

With the ACA still in place but uninsured rates rising, WalletHub measured the post-Obamacare uninsured rates in each of the 50 states.

In general, more affluent Northeastern and upper Midwestern states have more insured citizens than their less affluent southern and western counterparts. In addition to Massachusetts, the top five health-insured states are Vermont, Hawaii (which is socioeconomically similar to many Northeastern states), Rhode Island and Minnesota.

Besides the Lone Star state, the states with the highest percentage of uninsured adults are Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida and Alaska, according to the survey.

Having health insurance is a key indicator of financial well-being for individuals and families in the United States. It not only ensures that citizens have access to the care they need, but it also can significantly reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses, the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S.

In order to measure the rates of uninsured by state, WalletHub compared the overall insurance rates in the 50 states in 2018 using U.S. Census Bureau data.
