Ted's Montana Grill latest downtown Hartford restaurant to close permanently

Ted's Montana Grill has permanently shut down its downtown Hartford location about six years after it opened on Front Street.

"We made the difficult decision to close our downtown Hartford location," Co-founder and CEO George McKerrow said. "As we look to grow our company, this is the best decision for the future of Ted's Montana Grill."

While the location on Hartford's 35 Front St. is shuttered, McKerrow pointed local diners in the direction of Ted's South Windsor location on 500 Evergreen Way.

Ted's in downtown Hartford closed its doors in mid-March, when the pandemic forced all restaurants to switch to a pickup-only model, or shutter completely. The state has since expanded the service restaurants may provide, now allowing them to host outdoor dining and indoor dining at a maximum 50% capacity.

It's the latest closure of a downtown Hartford restaurant, Connecticut Restaurant Association Executive Director Scott Dolch said, noting Dish and Firebox previously shuttered permanently.

"It's been a difficult six months for our industry," said Dolch, who is pushing Gov. Ned Lamont to allow restaurants to put up physical barriers between indoor tables and at the bar to forego the 50% capacity cap. "Every day I seem to get another call or text that another restaurant is closing."

Connecticut's restaurant industry faces even tougher times in the not-too-distant future, as coming cold weather makes outdoor dining impossible.

The prospect is raising fears that an already battered sector is going to face a further shake-out once it’s too cold to host guests outdoors, where many diners prefer to sit to lessen the potential spread of the coronavirus.
