The Trumbull Marriott Shelton notified the state’s Department of Labor this week that it has instituted temporary layoffs, furloughs and hour reductions due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
The hotel’s general manager, Richard Pacino, issued a Worker Adjustment & Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice to the state and Trumbull First Selectman Vicki Tesoro on Wednesday.
According to the notice, 126 of the 136 employees at the 180 Hawley Lane, Trumbull, hotel have been impacted by the measures, which the business began initiating on March 17.
The company initially expected its staff reduction measures to last significantly less than six months, and that the location would return to normal business levels within that time frame.
However, the continuing pandemic has resulted in government COVID-19 directives being “repeatedly expanded and extended,” Pacino noted. As a result, he said people have been forced to remain in place, "restricting business, large gatherings and travel in general."
“These expanded and extended government directives have caused a sudden, severe and worsening downturn in the hospitality industry that now makes it reasonably foreseeable that these temporary actions may extend beyond six months,” the letter states.
Currently, the hotel is open only for essential workers such as medical personnel. Staff indicated Friday that the hotel anticipates being able to fully reopen to the public for “Phase 2” of Gov. Ned Lamont’s plan to reopen the state.
Lamont indicated via Twitter Friday that he plans to have Phase 2 of the state’s reopening efforts take effect a few days earlier than previously announced, on June 17 instead of June 20, so as not to coincide with Father’s Day weekend.
