The Tweed-New Haven Airport Authority formally approved an agreement Wednesday with Avelo Airlines, which will spend $1.2 million for upgrades to the airport.
Sean Scanlon, authority director, said the new, three-party agreement is between the authority, Avelo Airlines, and longtime Tweed airport operator Avports LLC.
The $1.2 million approved Wednesday will be used for various upgrades, including to the airport’s existing terminal, administrative building and parking areas.
Avelo plans to begin operating out of Tweed (HVN) in the third quarter of this year. Scanlon said the addition of Avelo will mean more non-stop destinations for customers. Specific destinations will be announced in the coming weeks.
The approval this week follows the airport’s major announcement in May of a planned $100 million expansion project, which will include a new terminal and expanded runway. A longer runway will allow for larger planes to land and take off, ultimately providing area customers with more flights to more destinations.
Scanlon said this week’s vote means Tweed “will begin delivering on the promise” that it will be a more modern, economic driver for the region.
“Last month, we took our first step toward long-overdue improvements to this airport, so that it can finally meet the needs of the region, helping to grow jobs and economic activity,” Scanlon said, in an announcement.
As planning begins for the new terminal, the $1.2 million will be used for shorter-term improvements at the existing one to improve customers’ experience, according to Scanlon.
The $1.2 million is in addition to $2.8 million which Avports has committed for upgrades.
By the end of 2021, Avelo expects to station three Boeing 737-700 aircraft at Tweed, Scanlon said.
Avelo Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said the company sees a huge opportunity in the New Haven area market.
Levy said the company’s investment in Tweed marks “the beginning of a new era of choice, convenience and everyday low fares,” for the region.
