Two startup bioscience companies backed by well-known local entrepreneurs have signed leases for space in the new Elm City Bioscience Center.

The Hurley Group, owner and manager of the center, which is at 55 Church St., New Haven, announced Tuesday that it has signed leases for 18,730 square feet of space.

The two tenants include Aztek Bio, founded by Kevin Rakin, Dr. Ranjit Bindra, Seth Herzon, and Kingson Lin, and Siduma Therapeutics, founded by Craig Crews, according to an announcement.

Crews, a Yale University professor, is the founder of Arvinas and Halda Therapeutics. Bindra is a co-founder of New Haven-based Cybrexa Therapeutics. Bindra also is a physician-scientist at Yale School of Medicine and serves as co-director of the Yale Brain Tumor Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital.

Aztek Bio and Siduma Therapeutics, which both began in New Haven, will continue their scientific research locally. The companies are expected to take occupancy at their new spaces this spring and summer, respectively, according to an announcement.

The Hurley Group declined to disclose the duration or financial terms of the leases.

David Goldblum, president of the Hurley Group, said the spaces include brand-new laboratories designed by New Haven architecture firm Svigals + Partners.

“We aim to make Elm City Bioscience Center a community for fast-growing companies graduating out of the area’s incubators and other smaller spaces; and these two companies are a great start,” Goldblum said.

Rebecca Frey, CEO of Siduma Therapeutics, said the company’s team is delighted to be moving into the center.

“We look forward to advancing our science and mission in the heart of New Haven’s thriving life science ecosystem,” Frey said.

The center is the latest commercial building in New Haven to convert to life science lab facilities, which have been in high demand.

The new center has approximately 113,000 square feet of space, including both offices and labs. Renovations started in August 2021 to make the building suitable for laboratory use.

The Hurley Group anticipates announcing additional leases in the coming months.
