U-Haul, which in late March bought a warehouse at 618 Capitol Ave. in Hartford for $1.1 million, says it plans to update and renovate the highly visible property, transforming it into a contemporary self-storage facility.
The property, formerly the longtime home of Capitol Archives and Record Storage, has been used to house paper records, computer media and other materials.
U-Haul said it will offer high-tech security features and climate-controlled units.
“This will be a modernized, clean and convenient location for our customers,” said Will Cintas, president of U-Haul Company of Central Connecticut.
U-Haul did not disclose what it intends to spend on the renovations.
The location, which will be known as U-Haul Storage of Capitol Ave., will be operated by U-Haul Moving & Storage, which is located just down the street -- and across I-84 -- at 755 Capitol Ave.
U-Haul plans to hire at least 10 employees to staff the two facilities.
Cintas said area customers have expressed demand for more storage options.
“We take pride in Hartford, and we look forward to expanding our sustainable footprint by reusing a building that has been part of this community since the 1930s,” he said.
