UConn engineering building renamed for Pratt & Whitney

UConn The Pratt & Whitney Engineering Building at UConn Storrs.

The main engineering building on the UConn Storrs campus has been renamed to reflect the state flagship university’s partnership with a major Connecticut industrial company.

The United Technologies Engineering Building is now known as the Pratt & Whitney Engineering Building. It is part of the UConn College of Engineering. State and university officials gathered for the renaming ceremony last week.

University officials said the renaming “served as a timely reminder of the interconnectedness of academia and industry. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, UConn and Pratt & Whitney are paving the way for transformative discoveries and advancements that will shape the future of engineering and beyond.”

The original building was dedicated in 1986 following a $1.5 million contribution from United Technologies. UTC’s name changed in 2020, following the company’s merger with defense giant Raytheon. The company is now known as RTX Corp., and East Hartford jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney is a subsidiary company.

Roughly 65% of Connecticut’s engineers are UConn graduates, the school said, adding that “the continued demand for engineers in the state has driven growth in the school’s enrollment, degree offerings, curricula, industry partnerships, and research impact over the last several years.”

“The prevalence of the aerospace industry has been a constant in Connecticut,” UConn President Radenka Maric said Friday. “We come full circle today, recognizing Pratt & Whitney as one of the state’s longest established aerospace companies, and for its ties to UConn College of Engineering and the UConn mechanical engineering teams.”
