In an effort to expand options for students graduating in a tough job market, the University of Hartford is offering class of 2020 graduates 50% off tuition for 16 master's degree programs.

The scholarship is available to all of the approximately 1,000 undergraduates who graduated this year -- students completed credit requirements in May, but the commencement ceremony was moved to Dec. 15 -- said R.J. McGivney, UHart's associate vice president for institutional effectiveness and continuing education.

"What we were trying to do is provide a soft landing spot for students," said McGivney, who noted there are 16 programs for which the scholarship is available.

The amount the scholarship saves each student varies depending on program, McGivney said. Half off tuition for UHart's MBA program represents about $24,000 in savings, while students in other programs could save around $10,000 or $16,000, he said.

McGivney expects about 100 students to take advantage of the scholarship this year, but there is no timeline for when members of the class of 2020 must use the scholarship, so whether they enter grad school this year or 20 years from now, they'll receive half-off tuition. Students who receive the scholarship may also use it to earn their master's on a part-time basis.

UHart isn't the only Connecticut university offering generous post-graduate program scholarships for class of 2020 graduates. The University of Connecticut School of Engineering this month announced a scholarship offering 65% off tuition for Class of 2020 members.

The 2020 Graduate Scholarship is available for the following UHart master’s programs:

  • Barney School of Business: business administration, business analytics, accounting and taxation, and management, as well as dual degrees and accounting or taxation certificates
  • College of Arts and Sciences: communication, organizational psychology (on campus), and neuroscience
  • College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions: early childhood and elementary education
  • College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture: civil, electrical and computer, environmental, and mechanical engineering, and professional certificates
