A group of students filed a class-action lawsuit against the University of New Haven Wednesday to recover tuition and other payments for the spring 2020 semester interrupted by the COVID pandemic.

The action, filed in U.S. District Court in New Haven, alleges breach of contract for failing to deliver educational services that were agreed upon and paid for by the plaintiffs.

The lead plaintiff in the action is Michelle Soriano of Stamford, a graduate student studying public administration at UNH. The lawsuit said Soriano paid approximately $5,908 in tuition and fees to the university for the spring 2020 semester, which began January 22.

She is represented by James J. Reardon Jr. of the law firm Reardon Scanlon LLP in West Hartford.

The plaintiffs seek a refund of tuition and fees “for in-person educational services, facilities, access and/or opportunities that the defendant has not provided.”

UNH has not held in-person classes since March 9, when university President Steven H. Kaplan suspended in-person classes immediately for an indefinite period.

UNH Associate Vice President Doug Whiting said the university does not comment on pending litigation.
