Utilities announce new 24-month COVID-19 payment plans

Three Avangrid subsidiaries are offering interest-free, two-year payment plans to help businesses and families recover from the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

United Illuminating, Southern Connecticut Gas and Connecticut Gas are offering the installment program.

Tony Marone, president and CEO of Avangrid Networks, said the companies recognize the economic impact the pandemic is having on many state businesses and residential customers.

“We have been working with our regulator to find ways to help them,” Marone said.

While the utilities are currently not shutting off service or penalizing customers, the utilities want to help them manage their balances, according to Marone.

“These new payment programs allow customers to pay down those balances over 24 months, without interest or penalty, protecting them from loss of service when the shut-off moratorium ends,” Marone said.

The utilities implemented the payment plan at the direction of the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority.

Customers who enroll in the plans pay no down payment, interest or late-payment fees. If you are already enrolled in a payment arrangement, you now have an opportunity to extend this arrangement to 24 months.

Residential customers can enroll in the COVID-19 payment plans through Nov. 1, while other customers can enroll through Aug. 1.
