Area utility companies announced Tuesday they are suspending late fees and disconnections for nonpayment for business customers due to the coronavirus pandemic.

United Illuminating, Southern Connecticut Gas and Connecticut Natural Gas, all subsidiaries of the Orange-based Avangrid Inc., indicated that the changes are aimed at helping their commercial customers and ensuring service continuity.

While the companies previously indicated they would take these steps for residential customers, they have now extended the policy to include business customers also.

The change is in recognition of the “financial difficulties that many of Connecticut’s residents and businesses are already beginning to experience,” the companies indicated in an announcement.
