Wallingford business announces more layoffs amid plant closure

A health technology company, Respironics Novametrix LLC, has notified the state of its latest layoff plans in advance of the upcoming shuttering of its Wallingford facility.

Its parent company, Philips, is ceasing all operations at the 5 Technology Dr. site due to a business reorganization.

All employees who work at the Wallingford location will lose their jobs, according to WARN notices filed with the state’s Department of Labor. The terminations will occur in waves through the end of the year.

Earlier this year, the company announced the first round of layoffs would begin on March 31, when 32 employees will be pink-slipped. These employees have a range of titles, such as assembler, engineer, scientist and technician.

In the latest WARN notice, received by the state last week, the company indicated that as of April 30, an additional 17 employees will be let go, including assemblers, engineers, machine operators and a manufacturing cell lead.

According to the notices, the company is offering severance and other benefits, including outplacement services, to all the affected employees.

“It is our hope that these programs will lessen the impact of the plant closure on individual employees and the community as a whole,” said Carol Socia, senior manager of human resources with Philips North America in Andover, Mass., in the latest WARN notice.

Respironics is a unit of a global company, Philips, which is headquartered in the Netherlands and focuses on health technology and solutions. Philips offers a variety of health-related products, such as technology related to breathing and respiratory care, X-ray systems, MRI and neuroimaging technology, for example.

Approximately 140 employees work at the facility. The property, a 51,882-square-foot building on 14 acres, is currently listed for sale for $3.1 million.

Mario Fante, senior global press officer with Philips, said the company initially announced the planned closure in June 2018, with approximately 140 positions to be impacted.

“Employees are being notified of their transition dates in phases throughout the year, which is reflected in our WARN Act filings,” Fante said via email. “Philips will continue to work closely with affected employees, to carefully manage the transition and ensure appropriate assistance and resources are available at this time.”
